UGLY CROOKED SPOONS
The process of turning a gnarly piece of raw wood into a spoon with a hatchet and a knife takes love, dedication and patience. It’s meditation and therapy alike. The shape of each spoon is dictated by the tree, the knife just follows the blue print. Just like human beings no spoon looks like the next. But they are all beautiful, extremely beautiful – in all their crooked imperfection.

The first time I saw one of Todd Crandall’s Ugly Crooked Spoons I knew there was something special about them. The wood was soft, the crooked shape was perfect in my hands and the hole right in the middle of the spoon was plain old cool.
But there was something else, something magical that couldn’t be seen or touched. I felt inspired! I suddenly had the strong urge to cook. It seemed that I was able to envision dishes that I had never cooked before.
The spoon became my magic wand. I used it every time when I cooked ever since. It has become a part of me
Today I am convinced, I did not find my spoon, my spoon found me!

ONE SPOON AT A TIME
Crandall never buys the wood for his spoons, which are made of maple or wax myrtle. Instead, he culls it from trees that have fallen or had to be cut down. That the wood is far from perfect is the point. It’s what gives his spoons their unique “ugly, crooked” look.
Figuring out how to carve a spoon from a random piece of wood can be a real challenge, says Crandall. ”But sometimes the worst-looking pieces make the most beautiful spoons.”
